WHY WAS THIS FUNDED?

The U.S. Department of State is responsible for maintaining secure and functional diplomatic facilities around the world, and Congress regularly appropriates funds for embassy construction through the Capital Security Construction Program. This program was created to upgrade and replace older, less secure embassy buildings with modern, safer structures.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Large construction projects abroad can face cost overruns, delays, and logistical challenges due to remote locations, supply chain issues, or local labor conditions. Oversight of contractor performance in a foreign country can also be more difficult than domestic projects, raising accountability concerns.

WHAT HAPPENS IF FUNDING IS REMOVED?

If this contract were cancelled, the U.S. Embassy in Praia would likely continue operating in its current facility, which may not meet modern security or safety standards. Diplomatic operations and services to American citizens in Cabo Verde could be disrupted or remain in a substandard environment.
