WHY WAS THIS FUNDED?

The Department of State is legally required to process immigrant and nonimmigrant visa applications for people who want to come to the United States, and it contracts out many of the support functions needed to do that work. This contract gives the agency the staffing and operational capacity to handle large volumes of cases.

WHAT PUBLIC PROBLEM IS IT TRYING TO SOLVE?

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people apply for visas to immigrate to or visit the United States, and the federal government needs staff and systems to review, organize, and process those applications accurately and on time. Without this support, visa backlogs would grow and the legal immigration process would slow down significantly.

WHO BENEFITS?

Visa applicants from around the world benefit by having their cases processed more efficiently, and U.S. citizens or residents who are sponsoring family members for immigration also benefit from faster case handling. The employees hired by LDRM LLC to do this work also benefit through jobs created by the contract.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

A contract of this size and duration carries risks around cost overruns, quality control, and whether the private contractor is meeting performance goals set by the government. There is also a risk that using a private company for sensitive immigration data processing could raise concerns about data security and government oversight.

WHAT HAPPENS IF FUNDING IS REMOVED?

If this contract were cancelled, the NVC (National Visa Center) and KCC (Kentucky Consular Center) would likely face severe staffing shortages and be unable to process the high volume of visa applications they currently handle. This would result in longer wait times for applicants and could disrupt legal immigration pathways for families and workers.
